There are essentially four types of retaining walls, as follows:
- Gravity: Retaining walls that depend on their mass to resist pressure from the soil behind them. These are typically made using stone, concrete or other heavy materials.
- Cantilevered: Retaining walls that use a steel-reinforced internal system to cantilever loads to a large, structural footing.
- Sheet piling: Driven into the ground and typically used in soft soil and tight spaces, sheet pile retaining walls come in a wide variety of materials from steel to vinyl, aluminium, wooden planks, and fiberglass.
- Anchored: Essentially a gravity, cantilevered or sheet piling retaining wall that features additional anchoring strength via cables or similar pulley systems anchored into the rock or soil.
Retaining walls in focus
Morestone Group’s Founder and Managing Director Terry Morton specialises in commercial structural landscaping, covering both hard landscaping (sod, brick walls, retaining walls, footings, brick edging) and soft landscaping (grass, plants and flora, dirt and irrigation).
While Morestone Group is young as a business, Morton has nearly two decades of leadership experience in the construction industry. Prior to founding Morestone Group, Morton honed his structural landscaping and leadership skills in the field for over 15 years as a Project Manager at a commercial construction company, who specialised in the delivery of engineered structural solutions for industrial, commercial and agricultural clients.
At Morestone Group, retaining walls are the very reason our business exists. Designing and building superior retaining walls that last is at the heart of what we do.
In Morton’s own words: “Building retaining walls is my passion – it’s why I started the business. When it comes to retaining walls, I’m driven by not only great workmanship but also by doing retaining walls right so they can stand the test of time.”
While some structural landscaping and construction professionals avoid jobs that require retaining walls, Morestone Group embraces them.
“It’s a specialised thing; there’s specific engineering requirements involved,” Morton explains about the niche market he’s carved out. “It’s not just building something – you’ve got to build it to a design. There’s compliance obligations and regulations that need to be adhered to. While it may appear to just be a wall, there’s a lot involved in retaining walls and we put a lot of consideration into how we construct them.”
